PUBLIC SPACE - Evaluation

6. Evaluation

Public space: in relation to other sub-systems:

Our proposal is to generate a platform of awareness will reach out to many sub-systems in a positive way. Our proposal of reduce- reuse – compensate, on the other hand, generates also more people on less square meters compared to current system. This may have positive and negative impacts that we have to be aware of:

Leisure and Knowledge and Public Space:

This is the one of the most important links to our sub-system.  The group proposes four plan of actions, which are: 1. Creation of the “sustainable route”, 2. Active role of schools, 3. Make all businesses sustainable, and 4. Creation of the “Center of Innovation”

For us, creation of innovation is one of the most important goals to achieve, as we want to inspire more tourists and locals by having a constant display and interaction between the tourists and the Texelaars. We have to be aware that we do not want to influence the sub-system’s goals in a negative way but only provide information and inspiration for their path.

Materials and Waste and Public Space:

Although it is hard to promote Bio-cycle, which is primary goal of the sub-system proposal, we have to be careful about the proposal that we make when it comes to materials used and the waste produced. It would be unwise to promote sustainability but use unsustainable materials or attract activities that would generate large amount of waste that we must process.

Sustainable Mobility and Public Space:

Although this affects less directly to public spaces, we have to remember that the public spaces are a sort of “focal points” for the tourists and especially for the Texelaars. Thus, in keeping with the sub-system’s policy of carpooling, green wheel style rentals and bike systems, the public spaces can provide a sufficient number of the travel desks that can provide these systems. However, with our policy of reduce the need for public spaces, this also reduces public transport options and could impose an undesired impact on the environment.

Texel as a host and Public Space:

This is an important aspect that will generate trust of tourist by improving the relationship among tourists and Texelaars.  By our proposal of Avoid-Reuse- Compensate, there might be more tourists on fewer public spaces then current scenario. Our sub-system has to be careful about not overloading tourist with sustainable information, but making them curious enough for them to ask the Texelaars for information. This has to be subtle but strong memory or influence, whilst always keeping in mind the primary goal as a host. Also, we have to understand the capacity of a host and not overload this by excessive tourism. This means that the primary function of public space should not be taken over by the knowledge platform.

Water-cycle and Public Space

There might be a potential danger to excessive use of water due to the high amount of tourists. The goal of the water-cycle sub system is to generate awareness within local people by giving a voice to start-ups interested in water management related services. This goal is again, in keeping with our main goal of an awareness platform.
