A visitor will note that the perspective does not seem to work and that the painting is placed at a surprising height. Why does the mural not conform to the rules of central perspective, which were well established at this time? In order to unfold the mystery of The Last Supper, its original design context must be observed: this is the refectory in which, day after day, the monks sat down to eat under the
watchful gaze of Jesus and his disciples; in effect a shared mediated space.
